HeyGears launched the G1X, a desktop machine that combines CMYK color 3D printing, UV direct-to-object printing, and textured surface reproduction in one sub-3000-pound package.

What the G1X Actually Does

HeyGears released the G1X on August 18 via Kickstarter, and it is one of the most unusual machines on the market right now. It is not a traditional resin SLA printer. It is a hybrid device that uses an Epson I3200 printhead across eight channels: CMYK, double white, transparent resin, and water-soluble support material. That configuration gives it two distinct operating modes. In 3D mode, it builds color resin parts layer by layer. In UV mode, it prints full-color textures and graphics directly onto existing objects: metal, wood, leather, ceramics, even previously 3D-printed parts.

Integrated LiDAR measures the initial build height and monitors layer thickness throughout the print. The system claims accuracy of plus or minus 0.01 mm, and it uses the data to adjust material output dynamically across channels. A line-scan camera runs simultaneously, correcting alignment on curved and long-format prints so the image does not stretch or distort. These are not specs you see on hobbyist-grade machines. They reflect the professional workflow HeyGears is targeting.

HeyVerse AI and Blueprint Studio handle the software side. The platform can generate 3D models from text prompts or reference images, which lowers the barrier for non-CAD users. The catch is that full-color output depends on OBJ files with embedded texture data. 3MF files from KeyShot are not natively accepted, which means professional studios using standard render-to-print pipelines will need to add a conversion step.

Who Is This Actually For?

The Kickstarter price starts well below 3000 pounds, which puts the G1X in an unusual position. It costs less than a Mimaki full-color 3D printer and less than a professional Stratasys PolyJet system, while overlapping with both in capability. Design studios doing client presentation models, prop makers who need realistic surface detail, and educators teaching color 3D printing are the most obvious audiences.

The UV direct-to-object mode is the differentiator. Being able to print custom graphics, braille, leather grain, or brushstroke textures onto an existing physical object without coating or wrapping opens workflows that resin printers have never supported. If the hardware delivers on the spec sheet, the G1X is not a toy. It is a small-scale industrial tool priced like a hobby machine.

What to Watch

Kickstarter hardware always carries delivery risk. The full modular system tops out at $16,995, which suggests the base unit may be a platform that grows with add-ons. Custom-jig features and a roll-to-roll UV-DTF attachment are still in development. If those ship on schedule, the G1X becomes much more versatile. If they slip, buyers are left with a color resin printer that still does not have a clear comparison point in the market.
