Your second printer should fix what your first one can't, not just give you a second copy of the same limits.
Your first printer solved 'can I even do this?'
The first printer is about proving the hobby is real. You learn the slicer, you fight the first layer, you print a benchy and feel like a wizard. By the time you want a second machine, the question has changed. Now you are asking what your current printer cannot do, and which of those gaps are worth money.
Name the limitation before you name a model
Most people buy a second printer for one of four reasons. The first is throughput: your machine is always busy and you want two things printing at once. The second is build volume: starter boxes like the Bambu A1 mini and Prusa MINI+ top out at 180 millimeters per side, while the home standard has moved to around 256 millimeters. The third is materials: if you want ABS, ASA, or TPU, you need a heated chamber and a direct-drive extruder more than you need a bigger bed. The fourth is waste: multi-color printing burns filament on purges, and a tool-changer fixes that in a way a second single-nozzle printer never will.
Write down your single biggest complaint about your current printer. That sentence is your buying guide. Everything else is noise.
Stick or switch
If you are happy with your brand, stay. A Prusa owner drowning in small prints might move to the CORE One L for volume. A Bambu owner who wants engineering filaments might step up to the X2D, which pairs a 300°C nozzle with a heated chamber that hits 65°C.
If you are frustrated, switching is reasonable, but count the cost. Bambu's plug-and-print ease is real, and so is the company's track record on closed-cloud control. Running a Bambu printer fully offline takes extra tooling like Bambuddy, and that work does not carry over to other brands. Prusa stays open-source, which matters if you would rather rebuild a printer than replace it.
One slicer to rule them
You will probably want to manage both machines from one place. You cannot drive a Bambu from PrusaSlicer, but OrcaSlicer, a fork of Bambu Studio, talks to both Prusa and Bambu hardware. All of these tools descend from Slic3r, so the workflow feels familiar no matter which way you jump.
Before you spend, consider an upgrade instead
A new printer is the loud option, not always the right one. A hardened steel or high-flow nozzle lets you print abrasive or faster. A Prusa MK4S can become a CORE One+ for $619, less than a new Bambu P2S at $549 and far less than a flagship. Spend on the gap, not on the logo.
Don't forget resin
If your FDM printer handles function but you want detail, a resin machine is a different kind of second printer, not a step down. Miniatures, molds, and fine parts come out sharper than any filament box can manage. The trade is mess, fumes, and a different safety routine, but for a lot of makers the second machine is the resin one.
The short version: your second printer is not your first printer again. It is the answer to a specific problem. Name the problem first.
