HP's new MJF 1200 system shrinks industrial multi jet fusion 3D printing into an office-ready package, with early access open now.

HP is doing something that sounds simple on paper but matters a lot in practice: it is putting a full production Multi Jet Fusion system inside a design studio instead of a factory. The MJF 1200 is a 12-liter build volume machine that runs the same PA 12 material platform as HP's industrial 5200 and 5600 systems. Parts printed on the 1200 are mechanically consistent with parts printed on the larger machines. That means a team can prototype in-house and shift volume production to any HP service provider without re-qualifying the material or process.

Why the 1200 Is Different

Previous MJF systems required factory-floor installation, network infrastructure, and trained operators. The MJF 1200 changes that equation. It fits into a design studio, a product development lab, or even a well-equipped workshop. The footprint is smaller, the setup is simpler, and the operating model is closer to a high-end office printer than a million-dollar manufacturing cell.

HP tested the 1200 with two external partners before the public launch. Anima Design, a Barcelona-based agency, moved its MJF work from an outside service bureau to an in-house 1200. The turnaround collapsed from days to hours. Eric Paris, a design prototyper at Anima, noted that Multi Jet Fusion was already the studio's go-to for final-stage validation because of surface quality and tolerance. The 1200 made that step happen on-site.

LualdiLabs, a medical device developer, served as HP's first medical beta tester. The company produces personalized devices close to the point of treatment. Distance between manufacturing and end use becomes a patient-outcome problem, not a shipping problem. If the 1200 can hold up under medical-device precision and regulatory scrutiny, it validates the platform in ways no consumer use case can.

Technical Consistency Across the Line

One detail that easy to overlook but operationally significant: the MJF 1200 uses the same fusing agents, the same fusion process, and the same PA 12 powder as HP's production-scale systems. Mechanical properties carry over. A bracket prototyped on the 1200 will behave like the same bracket printed on a 5200 at a production partner.

HP frames this as a worldwide ecosystem. Hundreds of MJF service providers exist globally. A team using the 1200 for prototyping can hand off volume production to any of those providers without re-qualifying. The company calls this approach 'never alone,' and it is a genuine shift from the traditional model where buying a new printer meant starting a new qualification process from scratch.

Software and Post-Processing

Two companion software packages round out the workflow. EXMeasure handles dimensional inspection: GD&T checks, flatness, parallelism, caliper simulation, color map comparisons. EXModel handles reverse engineering and CAD export: mesh cleanup, auto-surfacing, geometry preparation. EXMeasure ships with the MJF 1200. EXModel requires a separate license.

The 12-liter build volume is smaller than what HP offers in its industrial range, but it is large enough for most product-development parts. Users can nest multiple components in a single build, which keeps per-part costs down during the iteration phase.

Who Should Care

Product design teams that currently outsource functional prototypes to service bureaus are the primary audience. Moving MJF in-house removes the queue, reduces shipping delays, and gives designers direct control over material choices and build parameters. Automotive aftermarket shops digitizing legacy parts, medical device companies iterating on patient-specific devices, and engineering firms needing tight-tolerance functional prototypes all fall into that category.

The MJF 1200 is not a toy. It runs the same process as HP's industrial line, and it requires the same operational discipline. What it removes is the barrier of scale. A team does not need to commit to a production facility to access production-grade nylon parts.

Availability

HP plans to ship the MJF 1200 in early 2027. An Early Access Program is currently open at no upfront cost. Organizations interested in the program can register through HP's reinvent portal. For teams that have been outsourcing industrial 3D printing for years, the MJF 1200 is the first real option to bring that capability behind their own door.
