Skyroot Aerospace became the first private Indian company to reach orbit, flying Vikram-1 with 3D-printed Raman engines and two CubeSats.

Skyroot Makes History for India

On July 18, 2026, Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace launched Vikram-1 from Sriharikota, placing two CubeSats into a roughly 450-kilometer orbit. The rocket is the first privately developed launch vehicle to reach orbit from India, and its upper stage relies entirely on 3D-printed Raman engines.

The mission marks a turning point for India's commercial space sector. Until now, the country's orbital launches have been run by the state-owned Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Skyroot's success proves that a private team can design, build, and fly a working orbital rocket without government infrastructure.

3D Printing at the Core of the Design

The Raman engine family is where additive manufacturing earns its place on the critical path. Skyroot uses selective laser melting to print the combustion chamber, injector, and nozzle throat as a single piece, cutting part count and assembly time compared to traditional machined engines.

That matters when you are iterating a new design. A printed engine can go from CAD revision to hot-fire test in days, not months. Skyroot says the Raman engines produce about 100 kilonewtons of thrust, enough to serve as the upper stage for small-lift vehicles like Vikram-1.

What Vikram-1 Carried

The debut flight carried two customer CubeSats. Skyroot has not disclosed the customers' names, but the company says it has a backlog of rideshare bookings. The successful insertion into a sun-synchronous orbit means the vehicle is now a viable option for Earth-observation constellations.

What Comes Next

Skyroot plans to scale production at its facility near Hyderabad. The company says it can build one Vikram-1 every few months at current staffing, with capacity to double by 2027. Competing small-launch providers in India and abroad are watching closely. If Skyroot can sustain this cadence and lower per-flight cost, it will pressure every rideshare provider pricing under $50,000 per kilogram to low Earth orbit.

The Vikram-1 launch also signals that 3D-printed propulsion is no longer just a research curiosity. It is a production technology that a commercial launch provider now depends on for its core product. That is a significant shift, and it happened quietly in mid-July.
