Japan's Defense Ministry Chooses 3D-Printed Drones for Rapid Deployment
Japan's Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Agency has signed a mass production procurement agreement for interceptor drones built using 3D printers. The deal covers the Terra B1, a rocket-launched interceptor developed by domestic industrial giant Terra Drone. The goal is to field a large unmanned fleet by 2027.
The decision came after a demonstration with the Maritime Self-Defense Forces last month. The Terra B1 serves as the Japan-made counterpart to the Terra A1, which had already been fielded on Ukraine's battlefields earlier this year.
Why 3D Printing Matters for This Program
Using 3D printers simplifies and shortens the design and prototyping stage, according to Terra Drone CEO Toru Tokushige. It also allows the company to move into mass production quickly and adapt the interceptors to evolving threats without delaying the deployment schedule.
The ministry released its tender in late May, seeking drones that can intercept one-way attack drones such as the Shahed and anti-radar loitering munitions like the IAI Harpy. The entire process took only three months, compared to previous bids that took one to two years. That speed is a direct result of the digital manufacturing approach.
Distributed Production as a Defense Strategy
Terra Drone plans to spread production across multiple locations and eventually expand to local printing farms. The idea is to keep manufacturing running even if one facility comes under attack. A distributed production chain reduces the risk of the entire supply chain being disrupted.
3D printing has been changing military logistics since the U.S. Army and Navy deployed printers in the field in 2012. In Ukraine, printing farms have become a frontline necessity, producing drone parts and tools to support brigades. Japan's decision signals that the technology is moving from niche to core defense infrastructure.
What Comes Next
The contract does not disclose the number of units or the price, but the direction is clear. Japan is betting on distributed, digitally manufactured drones to counter fast-evolving threats. If the program stays on schedule, the Terra B1 will join a growing list of military hardware where 3D printing is no longer a prototype trick, but the standard way to build.
