The fashion house worked with Sculpteo to produce TPU bustiers, PA12 scales, and hidden structures for its latest Paris runway show.
Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall/Winter 2026-2027 Haute Couture collection, which debuted in Paris in July, relied on 3D printing for some of its most sculptural pieces. Creative director Duran Lantink partnered with French service bureau Sculpteo to manufacture components for five looks, using HP Multi Jet Fusion and selective laser sintering.
The project shows how additive manufacturing is moving from novelty to functional couture tool. The printed parts were not just decorative. They served as structural armatures, flexible bases, and repeatable surface elements that would have been impractical to make by hand at show speed.
Look 7: a deformed bustier
Sculpteo produced the flexible base for Look 7 using MJF and TPU. The result is a bustier with an intentionally distorted shape that still moves with the wearer. TPU's flexibility makes it comfortable against skin, while 3D printing allows the organic curves that conventional pattern cutting cannot easily achieve.
After printing, the piece was sanded, primed, and hand-finished to match the model's complexion. Beauty marks were painted on, anatomical details were refined, and a zipper was integrated into the back. The 3D-printed part provided the skeleton. The couture atelier provided everything else.
Look 19: thousands of individual scales
Where Look 7 used one printed structure, Look 19 used thousands. Each scale was printed separately in PA12 using SLS, then assembled by hand into a flexible surface that covers the body like armor. The approach turns the printer into a repetition machine, producing identical parts at no extra tooling cost.
The scales move together when the wearer moves, creating a reptilian texture that shifts with motion. The effect is partly biological, partly architectural, and entirely dependent on the precision that 3D printing provides.
Look 26: structure beneath the feathers
The third approach is the most subtle. For Look 26, Sculpteo printed a continuous TPU structure that shapes an elaborate pink feather dress. The structure stays hidden under the feathers. It defines the silhouette, handles the stress points, and keeps the garment lightweight.
Maison Février, the Paris feather house that has supplied Dior and Hermès, applied the finishing plumage. The collaboration pairs a craft dating to 1929 with industrial additive manufacturing. The result looks like traditional couture. The underlying logic is anything but.
What this signals
Fashion designers have experimented with 3D printing for years, but most pieces remain visually obvious as 'tech.' Gaultier's collection uses the technology in three different registers: visible sculptural form, repeated surface texture, and invisible structural support. That range suggests the technology is maturing past the spectacle phase.
Sculpteo CEO Alexandre d'Orsetti put it plainly: every fashion project brings unique constraints around shape, weight, and deadline. Those are exactly the conditions where additive manufacturing earns its place.
