Jean Paul Gaultier turned to 3D printing for five looks in a recent haute couture collection, working with French online manufacturing service Sculpteo to produce components in TPU and PA12 on HP Multi Jet Fusion machines.
Three Different Jobs for the Printer
The five looks did not all use 3D printing the same way. Each called for a different role.
Look 7 centers on a sculptural bust. The printed part is an armature, not the finished piece. Sculpteo produced the base in PA12, then the atelier sanded and primed it, applied multiple latex dipping cycles to build a skin-like surface matched to the model's complexion, hand-sculpted anatomical features, painted on beauty marks, and integrated a zipper along the back. The 3D-printed structure disappears under the handwork, but it is what made the form possible in the first place.
Look 19 is closer to repetition craft. Its petals were printed individually in PA12 and assembled by hand into a three-dimensional floral composition. Additive manufacturing handled the geometry of each petal at a scale and thinness that would be hard to achieve consistently by hand, while the atelier retained full control over how those petals arranged into the final piece.
Look 26 is the most structural. A custom TPU frame printed as a single designed element defines the garment's silhouette. The part stays lightweight and flexible, creating continuous flowing forms. In this look, additive manufacturing is not decorating the garment, it is constructing it. The shape of the piece comes directly from the print.
Why 3D Printing for Couture
Couture ateliers can execute almost anything by hand, but not every geometry on a runway deadline. A sculptural bust with specific proportions, dozens of distinct petals, or a continuous flexible frame that needs to drape and move: these are the gaps where tool-free additive manufacturing fits. Printing produces the raw parts with no per-variant tooling cost, then hands them to the atelier for finishing.
The same dynamic is showing up in fashion accessories elsewhere. Printing five couture looks on demand, each with different materials and post-processing requirements, is a demanding test of a digital manufacturing pipeline. That it worked on a runway schedule is a credible signal that on-demand additive manufacturing is mature enough for time-critical, high-stakes production.
The collection does not announce a new era of fully 3D-printed clothing. What it shows is that the practical middle ground, printed structure plus hand finishing, is now routine enough to appear on one of fashion's most visible stages.
