An Indian aerospace company and an Israeli 3D printing firm are joining forces to produce composite tooling domestically for the first time, cutting lead times by up to 90 percent.
India's aerospace and defense supply chain has a gap: composite tooling has been imported, because no domestic large-format 3D printing capacity existed to produce it locally. Lohia Aerospace Systems is trying to close that gap through a new alliance with Massivit 3D Printing Technologies.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding to install Massivit's RapidWings large-format additive manufacturing platform at Lohia's facility in Kanpur. The system will produce composite molds and manufacturing tools for aerospace, defense, and other composite industries.
What RapidWings actually does
Massivit's RapidWings platform prints large-format composite tooling in days rather than the weeks typical of conventional methods. The company claims the process cuts tooling lead times by up to 90 percent and reduces costs by as much as 50 percent. A single large-format printer can produce a composite mold or tool in a couple of days.
The platform is already in use at aerospace and defense facilities internationally. Massivit opened a Europe-based service center in Barcelona earlier in 2026 to support RapidWings expansion, and the Lohia deal marks its entry into the Indian market.
Why Lohia needs this
Lohia Aerospace acknowledged in a LinkedIn post that composite manufacturing in India has historically relied on manual tooling and imported production processes. The company's existing Kanpur facility covers 80,000 square feet, and it is expanding by an additional 250,000 square feet to accommodate the new additive manufacturing capability.
Under the alliance, Lohia Aerospace holds exclusive rights to deploy the RapidWings platform across India's aerospace and defense sectors, including applications for both manned aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles.
The domestic supply chain argument
The alliance is framed as more than a capital purchase. Lohia and Massivit are positioning it as import substitution: replacing foreign-produced composite tooling with domestic output. That framing matters in India, where the government has been pushing for greater self-reliance in defense manufacturing through the Defense Production Policy and related initiatives.
Whether the technology delivers on the cost and timeline claims will depend on how quickly Lohia's team scales the system across its expanded facility. The alliance gives the company a differentiated capability in a market that has had almost no domestic large-format additive tooling to date.
Lohia Aerospace Systems was incorporated in 2019 as the aerospace and defense arm of the Lohia Group. It also wholly owns Light & Strong Ltd., a composites manufacturer in Kanot, Israel, with two decades of aerospace composite production experience.
