Drone maker Modovolo picks Lyten's graphene-enhanced PA1205 filament as the standard material for its transportable aerospace 3D printer.

Graphene filament finds a serious industrial customer

Lyten's PA1205 graphene-enhanced nylon filament is now the designated material for Modovolo's BFP platform, a modular, transportable 3D printing system built for aerospace, defense, and industrial parts. The partnership makes practical sense: Modovolo designed the BFP because it could not find an off-the-shelf industrial printer fast or affordable enough for its own drone production. Lyten's filament gives the platform a material edge without adding overseas supply chain risk.

Modular and field-deployable

Most industrial 3D printers live inside factories. Modovolo's BFP is different: it is built inside a shipping container, designed to be moved to where parts are needed. The company says that means aerospace-grade components can be manufactured close to assembly lines or even in forward operating locations, rather than waiting for shipments from centralized production facilities.

The BFP was born out of Modovolo's own drone manufacturing needs. Justin Call, the company's CEO, put it plainly: "We could not find a 3D printer fast enough and affordable enough to produce aerospace-grade components at scale for our drones." Rather than wait for an existing supplier to deliver, Modovolo built its own system. The result is a platform that can produce drone structural parts on demand, and now it runs on Lyten's graphene-infused material.

Why PA1205 stands out

Lyten says PA1205 is lighter and stronger than comparable carbon fiber-reinforced nylons, with better tensile strength and impact resistance. Warping during printing is also reduced, which matters for large-format parts where thermal gradients can ruin an entire build. The company has not published independently verified test data, but the claims are specific enough to be testable, and the aerospace customers will demand that verification before committing to production runs.

A drone market pulling additive manufacturing with it

An Additive Manufacturing Research report presented at the recent UAS Additive Strategies conference estimated roughly 17 million drones will be produced this year, representing close to 900 million individual parts. Over the next decade, annual production could more than double. That scale of output is pushing manufacturers toward systems that can produce lightweight, high-performance parts close to where they are assembled. Modovolo's BFP platform, paired with Lyten's materials, is a direct response to that pressure.

The partnership expands on a relationship that began in 2025, when Modovolo started using Lyten materials to manufacture parts for its Lift Quadcopter-X. The new agreement extends that relationship from drone production to Modovolo's broader manufacturing platform, meaning Lyten's PA1205 filament will be specified across all BFP deployments going forward.
