Malping is moving beyond PLA print farms, offering high-temperature granulate printing for power electronics and medical clients.
Most 3D print shops open with a row of Bambu machines and a catalog of PLA colors. Malping, based in Neuhausen auf den Fildern, Germany, took the opposite route. The company runs granulate-based printers that handle PEEK, PEKK, ULTEM 9085, and PPS-GF20 at temperatures that would melt ordinary desktop machines.
Founder Bastian Gaedike says the strategy is not about showing off the hardest material. It is about solving actual problems for clients who need parts that survive heat, chemicals, or heavy loads. Power electronics housings and circuit board frames are the current focus. The firm also works with a local CNC shop to finish surfaces after printing, which gives the parts a look and tolerance level that raw extrusion alone cannot match.
The key machine is an ExAM 510 from NEW AIM3D, a German-made pellet printer with a 510 by 510 by 410 mm build volume and extruders that reach 425 degrees Celsius. Malping says it can deposit 500 grams of material per hour while cutting costs by more than 40 percent compared to filament-based printing. For parts larger than 1,000 cubic centimeters, the numbers make sense. Smaller jobs still go to desktop filament systems.
Gaedike is blunt about what separates his shop from the thousands of low-cost print farms online. Customers do not buy a material. They buy a function. Sometimes that means PEEK. Sometimes a well-chosen polyamide does the job at a fraction of the cost. The firms that always sell the most expensive material are not consulting. They are just selling.
The market for high-temperature material extrusion is still small. Malping is trying to grow into it by adding ESD-safe compounds and specialty pellets while expanding into medical and electronics consulting. The risk is real: PEEK prints are prone to warping and layer separation when the settings are off, and failed parts are expensive to scrap. The reward is a niche where barriers to entry are high and price competition is less brutal than in the PLA world.
It is a bet on specialization at a time when the broader industry is racing toward commoditization. If Malping can master the material and the consulting together, it may have built a moat that no filament farm can cross.
