A plug-in fix for a common AMS headache
Not every filament arrives on a spool that plays nicely with Bambu Lab's AMS. Cardboard spools, third-party reels, and bulk filament can jam, wobble, or simply not fit. Makers have long resorted to printable adapters, hand-cranked winders, or even cordless drills. Mintion's new W1 is a ready-to-use electric respooler designed to remove most of that friction.
The W1 transfers filament from non-standard source spools onto Bambu Lab reusable spools. It supports third-party reels, cardboard spools, and bulk spools up to 3 kg. A sliding guide on a linear rail moves across the width of the spool to spread the filament evenly, which helps avoid tangles and loose windings.
Three speeds, one job
The W1 offers Silent, Normal, and Turbo modes. In Turbo mode, Mintion says the unit can rewind a full 1 kg spool in under four minutes. That is fast enough to make respooling practical even if you swap materials several times a week.
It is not fully automatic: you still mount the spools, secure the filament end, and keep an eye on the process. The company also warns that it cannot untangle knotted filament on its own. But the device does remove the repetitive cranking and uneven winding that often come with DIY solutions.
From 3D-printed to injection-molded
Mintion originally planned to ship the first batch with 3D-printed housings. After feedback from early users and distributors, the company upgraded every pre-order to an injection-molded production version at no extra cost. Shipments are now expected in mid to late September.
The W1 is available for pre-order at $89.99, down from a regular price of $119.99. For makers running a Bambu Lab AMS with a growing pile of third-party filament, that could be a small price to pay for a cleaner workflow.
