The Hardware Is Here. The Software Is Catching Up.

Multi-material printers used to be a luxury. In the last year, models from Bambu Lab, Sovol, and others put four-filament systems within reach of home makers. The hardware is no longer the bottleneck. The bottleneck is color. Most machines can swap between four spools, but that only gives you four solid colors per layer. Getting gradients or intermediate shades still requires massive purge towers and long print times.

Two community-led slicer techniques are changing that. FullSpectrum and ImageMap both take a four-filament setup and squeeze far more colors out of it by blending during the print rather than dumping everything into a purge block.

FullSpectrum: Continuous Color Mixing

FullSpectrum works by treating each filament as a primary channel and blending them in varying ratios across layers. Instead of a hard switch from red to blue, the slicer gradually shifts the mix, producing purples and magentas that never actually leave the spool rack. The technique is built around the idea that four well-chosen filaments can cover most of the visible spectrum when you allow partial mixes.

The trade-off is speed. Blending requires thinner layers and more frequent nozzle changes. The result looks far better than a standard purge-tower print, but it is not fast.

ImageMap: Faster Gradients, Less Purge

ImageMap arrived a few months after FullSpectrum with a different approach. Rather than blending continuously, it maps an image's pixel values directly to filament ratios. Bright pixels pull more white filament. Dark pixels pull more black. The slicer tries to keep purges short by reordering layers so color changes happen only where needed.

In practice, ImageMap prints are noticeably faster than FullSpectrum for the same image. The color transitions are not as smooth, but the reduction in purge waste is real. For makers who want photo-real prints without buying a six-figure UV inkjet machine, that trade-off is worth understanding.

The Bottom Line

Neither method turns a $500 printer into a professional full-color machine. Both do prove that creative slicing can extract more value from hardware you already own. If you have a four-filament setup sitting idle after the novelty wore off, these two projects are worth testing this weekend.
