Multi-Color Printing's Dirty Secret
Ask anyone who has run a multi-material print and they will tell you the same thing: the colors are great, but the waste is brutal. Every filament swap burns purge material, and every tool change adds minutes. A four-color badge can easily consume two or three times more plastic than the visible model actually contains. That trade-off is why most color prints are still single-extruder hacks or expensive tool-changer builds.
A Slicer Trick That Cycles the Palette
A method demonstrated by maker YKG3D flips the usual logic on its head. Instead of depositing one solid color per region and switching tools, the slicer rotates through its full palette of colors on every single layer. For each color, it then dials the prominence up or down, either by adjusting the amount of filament extruded or by slightly displacing the edges of each color band.
The effect is a continuous blend rather than a hard seam. Gradients that would normally require a dedicated gradient filament can instead be synthesized from a handful of base colors. Because the printer is not stopping to purge between distant color zones, the print also finishes faster than a conventional multi-tool approach.
The Catch: Apparent Layer Height
Nothing is free. The more base colors you stack in a single layer, the thicker that layer effectively looks. A three-color print at a 0.2 mm layer height reads visually like a 0.6 mm layer, because the eye blends the sub-bands into one coarse step. Steep walls make it worse: once a surface gets too vertical, the color-blending illusion collapses and you see the individual bands again.
For flat or gently curved models, think coasters, badges, lithophanes, and decorative panels, the trick is genuinely useful. For tall vertical walls it is less convincing. As with most 3D printing advances, the win is situational rather than universal.
Why This Matters
The appeal is not just prettier prints. By removing tool changes from the critical path, the approach chips away at the two things that have held back mainstream multi-color printing: time and waste. Combined with cheaper multi-material-capable hardware, techniques like this are steadily moving color from impressive party trick to routine option for hobbyists.
The 2018 research the method builds on showed the math was sound. What is notable now is that a maker has packaged it into a working slicer workflow anyone can try. If the trade-offs are acceptable for your model, it is a genuinely faster route to gradient color.
