Nike and Zellerfeld have revealed the first sneaker from the Air Works program, a fully 3D-printed Air Max collaboration.

Nike has revealed the first sneaker from its Air Works program, and it is fully 3D printed. The shoe was made in partnership with Zellerfeld, the same company behind Nike's earlier Air Max 1000 experiment. The new design draws clear inspiration from the Air Max Tailwind V, with a sculpted heel and a visible Air unit in the forefoot.

Unlike traditional sneakers, this upper is a single piece printed in one go. There are no seams, no stitching over the toe box, no glue lines. The entire shell comes off the printer ready to wear, aside from finishing and the Air unit installation.

The Air Works program itself is a global initiative. Eight designers from eight cities each created their own 3D-printed Air Max design. The first released model comes from the Japan-based designer. Nike plans to expand the program and bring more localized designs to market.

This is not just a colorway change. The manufacturing method is completely different. Traditional injection molding requires expensive tooling for each size and colorway. 3D printing lets Nike produce small runs without retooling. That opens the door to more experimental shapes and faster iteration cycles.

For now, the shoe is a limited release. The broader question is whether 3D-printed uppers can move beyond niche collaborations into Nike's mainline products. The material properties and long-term durability of fully printed uppers still need real-world testing at scale.
