Bosch and Nikon SLM Solutions have printed a complete V8 engine block as a single piece. The part was built in AlSi10Mg on Nikon SLM's NXG XII 600 at the Bosch Additive Solution Center in Nuremberg, Germany. No molds. No sand cores. No months spent waiting for tooling.

The message is hard to miss. Cylinder blocks are among the most demanding parts in automotive manufacturing. They handle high pressures, complex cooling passages, and tight dimensional tolerances. Printing one in a single build is not a lab curiosity. It is a direct test of whether metal additive manufacturing can move past prototypes and into real production workflows.

Why this matters

Conventionally, a V8 block starts as a casting. Tooling takes weeks or months to produce and validate. Design changes mean tooling changes, and tooling changes mean delays. Additive manufacturing removes that bottleneck. Engineers can iterate geometry directly from the CAD file, build it, and inspect it without touching a mold.

The freedom also changes what is possible inside the part. The partners point to integrated cooling channels, topology-optimized structures, and the consolidation of multi-component assemblies. Weight can be removed where analysis shows it is not needed and material can be added exactly where loads are highest. In high-performance and motorsport applications, that kind of targeted light-weighting is a real advantage.

Bosch is one of the world's largest tier 1 automotive suppliers. Nikon SLM Solutions brings the twelve-laser NXG XII 600 platform plus materials qualification, process parameters, build preparation software, and application engineering. Projects like this need both. A fast printer without manufacturing know-how is just an expensive box; deep automotive expertise without a production-grade machine does not get a block built.

Not a production part, but a clear signal

This is a demonstrator, not a serialized component sitting in a production vehicle. Still, it signals where the technology is heading. Metal AM has already found niches in aerospace, medical implants, and motorsport. Automotive powertrain parts represent a much larger prize, and engine blocks sit at the center of that prize.

The question is no longer whether metal AM can produce complex aluminum parts. The question is how quickly the supplier ecosystem can scale the quality systems, process controls, and economics needed to make it routine. Bosch and Nikon SLM's single-piece V8 block is a strong step in that direction.
