First Naval Warfare Center Cleared for Metal Additive Manufacturing
The US Navy just took a concrete step toward printing metal parts across its entire maintenance ecosystem. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has granted official approval to the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Keyport, Washington, for its powder bed fusion process using 17-4PH stainless steel on the EOS M290 system.
This is not a small pilot. Keyport is the first of ten Naval Warfare Centers to earn NAVSEA qualification for a metal AM process. The approval follows seven years of work that started as a Naval Innovative Science and Engineering project and matured into a formal qualification effort backed by the Submarine Industrial Base program.
What the Qualification Actually Means
The team validated the process through destructive testing and even simulated real-world disruption: they halted a build for 12 hours to mimic a power outage, then resumed printing. The final parts passed inspection. That resilience matters when you are printing components for submarines and ships that cannot wait for a replacement part to ship from a contractor.
Bryce Weber, platform readiness and endurance technology lead at Keyport, said the qualification creates a transferable instruction set for other organic industrial base sites. Once other commands adopt the same parameters, the number of machines legally allowed to print critical shipboard parts during maintenance availabilities expands quickly.
17-4PH Is Just the Beginning
Keyport is not stopping at one alloy. The team is already working toward qualification of 316L stainless steel, another workhorse material for marine hardware. If that clears, the Navy gains a second certified process on the same machine, doubling the useful part count without buying new equipment.
The approval also connects to broader Navy digital infrastructure. Austal USA operates the Digital SEA platform, which lets suppliers access technical data needed to produce metal AM parts. Barnes Global Advisors recently landed a contract to build a qualifications database for Inconel 625 and 316L stainless, and that data will likely flow into Digital SEA as a centralized repository.
Why This Timing Matters
The US Navy has effectively subsidized much of American metal AM adoption this decade. This approval marks a transition from experimental planting to actual harvesting. Parts printed at Keyport can now be shared across the Navy supply chain, not just used in-house. For defense contractors and additive manufacturing shops, that means a clearer path to selling qualified metal parts to the Navy without starting from scratch on every alloy and geometry.
Military 3D printing has moved fast in 2026. Between Firestorm Labs printing drones at sea and the Air Force rebuilding grounded aircraft with no vendor support, the services are treating additive manufacturing as a ready capability, not a future promise. Keyport's NAVSEA qualification fits that pattern exactly.
