A community-built OrcaSlicer add-on rotates colors layer-by-layer instead of swapping tools every few millimeters. The result is smoother gradients and fewer tool changes.
How the method works
Multi-color FDM printing usually means tool changes: the printer swaps filaments mid-print, pausing and purging each time. That is slow and wastes material. A new approach built on OrcaSlicer skips most of those swaps by rotating through a color palette on a single nozzle, one layer at a time.
The technique, posted to GitHub as OrcaSlicer-ImageMap, loads an image that tells the slicer which color to use for each region. During each layer, the software advances to the next color in the palette rather than stopping for a physical swap. Over many layers, the eye blends the thin stripes into smooth gradients.
Why it prints faster
Fewer tool changes means less time wasted on purges and park moves. The method trades layer-time for tool-time, and on most consumer printers that is a good deal. The tradeoff is that more base colors make apparent layer lines thicker: a 3-color print at 0.2 mm layer height visually reads closer to 0.6 mm.
Limitations to know
Steep walls break the illusion. Colors smear or show banding where slopes are sharp. The technique works best on rounded or gently curved geometry. If you need crisp color boundaries, traditional tool-changing or AMS-style systems still win.
