Real-time in-situ inspection moves into more depots and bases as Phase3D taps Phillips Federal's defence network.
Phase3D has a new distribution partner for North American defence. Phillips Federal will serve as the exclusive channel partner for Phase3D's inspection technology, giving the Chicago-based company a clearer path into depots, bases, and manufacturing programs that already know and trust Phillips.
Why this partnership matters now
Phase3D's Fringe Inspection platform uses structured-light scanning to capture calibrated height maps of every layer during a metal AM build. That is different from the camera-based monitoring most people are used to. Instead of qualitative images, it produces unit-based measurements that can catch defects in real time rather than after a build finishes.
The company already has defence wins. Its technology is deployed at the U.S. Navy's Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Danville, Virginia, and at the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing. Last week, Phase3D announced a Department of the Air Force contract to extend Fringe Inspection into ceramic matrix composites, the materials used in hypersonic vehicles and next-generation turbine blades.
The bottleneck is qualification, not printing
Phillips Federal President Tim McClanahan put it plainly: defence customers need practical ways to increase capacity and get critical parts into production faster. Real-time inspection lets them see problems before they waste machine time and material. CMCs are especially hard to qualify because defects can appear at nearly every stage, from tape fabrication through autoclave consolidation and final machining. Conventional non-destructive evaluation methods were built for metals and polymer composites. They do not translate well.
Phase3D's CMC program will develop material-specific calibration routines and anomaly-classification models. The goal is to identify surface deformation and defect signatures as a part is being built, not after it goes through post-process CT scanning or destructive sectioning. That could cut rework costs and accelerate qualification timelines.
What to watch
The partnership does not involve new technology. It is a channel play that scales Phase3D's existing platform across more of the defence industrial base. If the Air Force CMC work succeeds, the same inspection approach could move into commercial aerospace, energy, and industrial ceramics. Phase3D is hiring across engineering and director-level roles, which suggests it expects demand to grow.
