PLA is the easiest filament to print, right up until it isn't. Here are the temperatures, speeds, and cooling settings that stop the common failures.
The filament everyone starts with, and the one that still surprises
PLA is the default for a reason. It prints at low temperature, smells faintly of sugar, and sticks to a cold bed well enough that beginners get a result on day one. The catch is that it just works stops being true the moment you chase speed or push a tricky brand.
Nozzle temperature: 190 to 220C is the safe band
Most PLA lands between 200 and 210C on a 0.4mm nozzle. Plain PLA runs cooler, around 190 to 200C. Silk, glow, and wood filled blends want the top of the range, 210 to 220C, because the additives flow worse.
If you see rough, rippled top surfaces, the nozzle is too cold. If you see stringing and shiny blobs, it is too hot. Move in 5C steps until the extrusion looks matte and even.
Bed temperature: 50 to 60C
A heated bed at 55C is the sweet spot for PLA on textured PEI. Drop to 50C in a warm room, push to 60C on a cold garage floor. Cool the bed to 30 to 40C before removing the print and the parts pop off without a fight.
Speed: faster than you think, slower than you hope
Old printers topped out near 50mm/s. Modern CoreXY machines from Bambu, Elegoo, and Creality cruise at 100 to 200mm/s on PLA with decent cooling. Start at 60mm/s, then raise it once your cooling keeps up. If corners bulge or overhangs droop, the fan or the speed is the problem, not the filament.
Cooling: run the part fan hard
PLA needs airflow to set the layer below it before the next one lands. Run the part cooling fan at 100 percent after the first layers. Bridge and overhang settings matter more than people expect, so bump the fan for any horizontal span.
First layer: slow it down and watch it
The first layer decides everything. Print it at 20 to 30mm/s, squash the line just enough that you cannot see gaps, and confirm the nozzle is clean. A bad first layer is the single most common cause of a failed PLA print.
Fixes for the usual failures
- Stringing: raise temperature 5C or drop retraction distance, then enable coasting.
- Warping at corners: raise bed temp 5C, use a brim, and keep drafts away.
- Clogged nozzle: cold pull with cleaning filament, or swap to a hardened 0.4mm tip.
- Weak layer adhesion: lower speed and confirm the fan is not blowing on the first layers.
Brand notes worth knowing
Bambu PLA and Polymaker Polylite print close to the 200 to 210C sweet spot and keep their diameter tight. Elegoo and Creality bulk spools cost less and run fine once you dial the temperature.
