Legal analysis finds Prusa Researchs Open Community License has undefined terms and structural problems.

Open License That Isnt Really Open

Prusa Research introduced the Open Community License (OCL) in late 2025 to prevent competitors from using their open-source designs while keeping them open to the community. A new legal analysis suggests the license may not hold up.

Key Problems Found

Licensing expert Kyle E. Mitchells line-by-line analysis identifies issues:

  • Undefined commercial term: The license uses commercial and non-commercial without definitions.
  • Complex structure: Combines commercial segmentation with share-alike terms.
  • Court uncertainty: Without definitions, courts must interpret the license.

Mitchell: I dont see this as a particularly well-drafted license.

Community Impact

For hobbyists, impact is minimal. The bigger question is what this means for open-source hardware overall.
