Prusa just launched OpenPrintTag, an open and rewritable NFC standard that lets any printer, dryer, or app read any spool with no cloud and no brand lock-in.

Smart Spools That Forget Who They Are

Smart filament spools have been around for a while, but the smart part usually disappears the moment you leave one company's ecosystem. A tagged spool can tell one printer exactly what it contains, then turn into an ordinary roll of plastic when you load it somewhere else. The material has not changed, nor has its color, weight, or recommended temperature. The new printer simply cannot read the tag, and you are back to typing details by hand.

What OpenPrintTag Actually Does

Prusa's OpenPrintTag is meant to fix that with an open, rewritable NFC standard that printer makers, filament companies, and software developers can all adopt. It is not a Prusa-only feature; it is a published format anyone can build against. The tag can hold the filament manufacturer, material type, color, recommended temperatures, spool weight, and remaining filament.

No Cloud, No Lock-In

Because that information lives on the NFC tag itself, compatible devices do not need to contact a cloud service to identify a roll of plastic. In practice, the same spool could move between printers, dryers, storage systems, phones, and inventory apps without being set up from scratch every time. That directly contrasts with ecosystems that keep basic filament data locked inside one brand's hardware.

Why Rewritable Tags Matter

The rewritable part is more useful than it first appears. As you dry a spool, use filament, or refill a reusable core, the data on the tag can be updated to reflect reality instead of stale factory values. Automatic filament recognition is genuinely handy once you have had it: load a spool, the printer knows the material and color, and you skip the menu digging. OpenPrintTag aims to make that convenience travel with the spool instead of dying at an ecosystem boundary.

The Bigger Picture

OpenPrintTag will not make every spool work perfectly with every machine tomorrow. But it gives the industry a practical, shared foundation for stopping the practice of fencing off filament information behind proprietary hardware. If enough printer makers and filament brands adopt it, the boring chores of filament management, like re-entering the same specs on every device, could finally fade away.
