Prusa Research has released a new natural PA11 filament designed for flexible, low-friction functional parts that move and take repeated impacts.
A New Direction for Prusament
Prusa Research has expanded its filament lineup with something it has not offered before: a pure, unreinforced PA11 nylon. Called Prusament PA11 Natural, the new spool targets a specific use case that the company's existing PA11 Carbon Fiber does not cover well. The carbon fiber variant adds stiffness and strength, but it also changes the surface finish and makes the filament abrasive to print. For parts that need to flex, slide against each other, or survive repeated knocks, the unreinforced version is the right choice.
The key properties here are interlayer bonding and sliding behavior. Prusa is positioning PA11 Natural as the better option when a printed part needs to move. That could be a hinge, a living hinge, a gear, a bushing, or any mechanical component where friction and repeated loading are part of the job. The natural translucent yellowish-white color means you see the part as it is, without any pigment getting in the way of material performance.
Price and Availability
Prusament PA11 Natural ships in an 800g spool priced at $122, which works out to roughly $152 per kilogram. That puts it firmly in premium filament territory, but the price is in line with what specialty nylons from other manufacturers charge. The company says more colors are in the pipeline, though only the natural variant is available at launch.
An 800g spool is a practical size for a material you are testing or using for small-batch functional work. If the part calls for PA11 and you have confirmed that the material is right for the application, the spool size is not a constraint. For larger production runs, buying multiple spools is straightforward.
Who This Is For
PA11 is not a beginner material. It prints at higher temperatures than PLA or PETG, it is hygroscopic, and it demands a heated bed and a stable enclosure to prevent warping on larger parts. Prusa's own Prusa MK4, XL, and MINI handle it fine with the right setup, but any printer with a weak frame or inconsistent temperature control will struggle. If you are comfortable with nylon and have been looking for a drop-in Prusa filament that does not require the carbon fiber workflow, this fills that gap exactly.
The functional part angle is worth paying attention to. Most consumer 3D printing is still focused on visual prototypes and cosplay props. PA11 Natural is aimed at the other end of the spectrum: parts that have a mechanical job to do. That is a market Prusa knows well, and it is smart positioning for the Prusament brand.
What It Means for the Market
Specialty engineering materials from established brands carry weight. When Prusa puts its name on a new PA11 variant, it signals that the material has passed the company's internal quality bar for consistency and printability. That matters more than it might sound. Cheap PA11 filaments from unknown brands have a reputation for inconsistent diameter, moisture-related print failures, and parts that do not deliver on the material's stated mechanical properties. Prusa's in-house manufacturing and quality control give buyers a reason to trust the spec sheet.
The broader trend is worth noting: Prusament has been expanding beyond its Galaxy Black comfort zone into materials that serve specific engineering niches. PA11 Natural is the latest example. Each release nudges the Prusament lineup closer to covering the full range of what a serious maker or small workshop might need from a single brand. Whether that strategy continues will depend on how this launch is received, but the direction is clear.
