What PVA actually is
PVA stands for polyvinyl alcohol. It is a synthetic polymer that dissolves in plain water, and in 3D printing it earns its keep as a support material. When you print a model with awkward overhangs, bridges, or internal channels, you can lay down PVA as the support. Drop the finished part in water and the support melts away, leaving clean surfaces that breakaway supports would scar.
When to reach for it
PVA shines on prints where you cannot reach the support to snap it off: enclosed cavities, fine organic shapes, miniatures with overhangs, and anything with a surface you do not want to sand. The trade is cost and fuss. PVA runs several times the price of PLA, and it soaks up moisture from the air, so storage and drying matter more than with most filaments.
Settings that work
Most PVA prints between 200 and 220 degrees Celsius, with a bed around 50 to 60. Keep your cooling fan on; PVA likes active cooling to lock in thin support walls, though too much can weaken tall towers. Print it from a dry box if you can. If the filament has been sitting open, dry it at about 45 to 50 degrees Celsius for several hours before use. Wet PVA bubbles, pops, and strings.
PVA vs BVOH
BVOH is the other common water-soluble support. It tolerates higher temperatures and dissolves faster than PVA, which makes it a better match for PETG and higher-temp materials. It also costs more. If you print mostly PLA, PVA is the value pick. If you print PETG or need speed in the dissolve tank, BVOH earns its price.

Dissolving without the mess
Use lukewarm water and agitate gently. Warm water cuts the wait from hours to minutes. Change the water if it gets cloudy with dissolved polymer, and rinse the part after. Do not expect PVA to survive outdoors or in a humid workshop; once it meets moisture it is on the clock.
