Filament is only part of the story. Here is what electricity, drying, and failed prints add to every model you print.
Filament is cheaper than you think, and that is the trap
A 1 kg spool of budget PLA runs about $12 to $25, and sale prices often drop below $10. That works out to roughly one to one and a half cents per gram. A phone stand uses around 40 grams, so the plastic costs about 50 cents. A desk organizer or cable box can eat 150 to 200 grams, which is two to four dollars of material.
Those numbers sound tiny, so most people round them down to nothing. The grams add up faster than the math suggests, especially once you print daily.
Electricity is not the monster people fear
On a modern small printer like the Bambu Lab A1 Mini, draw while printing PLA sits between 30 and 70 watts. At the US average rate of about 19 cents per kilowatt-hour, an eight-hour print uses roughly half a kilowatt-hour, or about a dime. A 20-minute benchy costs under a cent. Power adds maybe three to five percent on top of your filament for a typical job.
Older machines with large heated beds tell a different story, but on efficient current hardware, electricity is a rounding error.
Drying is the cost nobody budgets for
Print PLA only and you can skip this. Step up to PETG, TPU, or nylon and drying stops being optional. A wet spool of PETG strings, pops, and snaps apart at the layers. A budget dryer like the Sunlu FilaDryer S2 costs around $50 and holds the 70°C that tougher materials need.
Spread that $50 across your first 25 spools of PETG and you are at about $2 a spool. The dryer's own power is pennies: a 50-watt unit running a six-hour cycle costs about six cents. The catch is budget dryers top out near 70°C, while ABS and ASA prefer closer to 80°C, so plan longer cycles for those.
Failed prints are the real tax
Every calculator forgets the obvious. A failed print burns filament, electricity, and machine time with nothing to show. Standard advice is to add five to ten percent for purge lines, brims, supports, and the tail end of a spool you can no longer feed. In practice, a bad first layer or a support that welds to the part can cost you an entire evening.
What this means for your budget
3D printing is still cheap compared to buying parts, but it is not free after the printer. The honest running cost is filament plus a sliver of power plus occasional drying, plus the waste from prints that go wrong. If you track grams and treat drying as a standing cost, you will print with a clear picture instead of a pleasant myth.
