A Space Company Moves Into a Racing Town

Rocketdyne has opened a dedicated additive manufacturing facility in Daytona Beach, Florida, putting rows of metal 3D printers to work building rocket engine components around the clock. The opening comes at a specific moment: Rocketdyne became an independent company in August 2026 after AE Industrial closed its purchase of L3Harris's propulsion business. The Daytona Beach facility, previously L3Harris's metal AM operation, gives the newly independent Rocketdyne an established production base with years of qualified work already behind it.

What the Machines Are Actually Building

The facility uses laser powder bed fusion to produce combustion chambers, manifolds, and nozzles. These are not prototype parts. Rocketdyne says components made in Daytona Beach are flying on current U.S. space missions and supporting programs that trace back to Apollo and continue through Artemis. The company's pitch is practical: these geometries are genuinely hard to make with conventional machining and welding, and 3D printing lets engineers design for performance first rather than being constrained by what a mill can reach.

CEO Kristin Houston has been explicit about the operational advantages. Metal powder is cheaper to store and ship than forged billets. Designs iterate faster because there is no tooling lead time. Rework drops because near-net-shape prints produce less waste than subtractive workflows. For a propulsion business that runs on tight delivery schedules, those are meaningful numbers.

From Acquisition to Independence

The Daytona Beach facility was not built from scratch. It was acquired as part of L3Harris's 3D Materials Technologies unit, which Aerojet Rocketdyne bought back in 2019 and which has operated continuously since then. Ashley Nichols, now Director of Additive Manufacturing at Rocketdyne, led L3Harris's metal AM production through that transition and stayed on. That continuity matters in additive manufacturing, where process qualifications and material certifications take months to build and can be lost quickly when teams disband.

Rocketdyne's independence in August 2026 was preceded by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman visiting the company's Mason, Ohio facility in the same month. That visit, combined with the Daytona Beach opening, signals that Rocketdyne is trying to position itself as a full-spectrum propulsion supplier: heritage designs and flight heritage on one side, modern AM production on the other.

Why Daytona Beach

The choice of location is not random. The facility has been operating as a metal AM site since before the Rocketdyne name returned. It has 28,000 square feet of production space, qualified processes for titanium alloys and Inconel, and a workforce that has been running LPBF systems continuously through the L3Harris era and into the Rocketdyne era. Rebuilding that in a new location would take years. Keeping the existing team and equipment in place lets Rocketdyne claim production continuity, which matters when your customers are NASA and defense prime contractors who require full traceability.

The Bigger Picture

Rocketdyne's Daytona Beach move fits a broader pattern in the aerospace AM industry. Additive manufacturing has moved from a prototyping curiosity to a production technology for high-value, low-volume parts. Combustion chambers, injectors, and manifolds are exactly the kind of complex, high-temperature components that benefit most from metal 3D printing, and they are exactly the parts where legacy suppliers have struggled to compress lead times.

The timing also matters. With Rocketdyne now independent, the company is free to pursue commercial space contracts that may not have fit inside L3Harris's broader portfolio. Additive manufacturing lowers the barrier to entry for new launch providers who need qualified propulsion components but do not want to invest in traditional forging and machining infrastructure.
