A Japanese housing startup is teaming with a leasing giant to finance 3D printers and speed construction in a market short on labor.
Serendix, a Nishinomiya-based startup that bills itself as Japan's first 3D-printed home builder, has signed a business alliance with JA Mitsui Leasing. The partnership is designed to speed the adoption of 3D-printed construction across Japan by easing equipment financing and expanding sales channels.
JA Mitsui Leasing will use its financing arms to help construction companies buy Serendix's 3D printers and related equipment. The two companies also plan to collaborate on selling facilities and stores built with Serendix's technology, and they are studying building lease services that would let customers use 3D-printed structures without buying them outright.
Serendix was founded in August 2018 and has been pushing 3D printing as an answer to Japan's construction labor shortages, rising material costs, and need for disaster-resilient buildings. The company completed Japan's first 3D-printed home in March 2022 and has since built additional models, including a two-person residence in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, delivered as reconstruction housing after the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake.
The alliance comes at a moment when Japan's construction industry is under pressure. An aging workforce and strict immigration limits have made it harder to staff projects. 3D printing offers a way to automate part of the building process and reduce the number of workers needed on site.
Serendix is not staying in Japan. The company is involved in a 3D-printed reconstruction project in Ukraine, with designs supervised by an architect who worked on NASA's Mars habitat concepts. It has also partnered with JR West Group to build station buildings, showing that the technology is moving beyond single-family homes into infrastructure.
The JA Mitsui Leasing deal gives Serendix access to a national customer base and financial products that could make 3D-printed buildings easier to sell to cost-conscious construction firms. Whether the model spreads beyond early adopters will depend on how quickly the company can bring down costs and prove that printed structures hold up over time.
