If you have a 3D printer sitting idle, print a mechanical model. Unlike static figurines, these prints actually move, and watching them work is strangely satisfying. Here are six that fit on any bed and finish fast enough for a single afternoon.
Planetary gears fidget spinner
Fidget spinners peaked years ago, but the planetary gears version is something else. The gears print in place, no assembly required, and they get smoother the more you spin them. A quick blast from a heat gun speeds up the break-in process. MakerWorld hosts several variants, including a Revolver and a Pipeline model from the same designer.
Reduction gearbox
This model packs nine compound gears into a compact ratio of 262,144 to 1. Turning the handle by hand shows exactly how gear reduction works, and someone in the comments already replaced the crank with a small electric motor for extra flair. It is a good desk toy and a better physics lesson.
Benchy wave machine
If you have a drawer full of Benchy boats, put one to work. The wave machine is a hand-cranked automaton that makes your little boat bob through pretend stormy seas. It turns the standard torture-test model into a moving display piece, and it prints in place just like the spinner.

The print is mostly self-contained and makes a nice paperweight once you are done showing it off.
Miniature crank-driven mechanism
Sometimes the best print is the simplest one. A small crank, a connecting rod, and a rotating output make a tiny engine that converts rotary motion into linear motion. Print one, film it, and send it to anyone who claims 3D printers only make trinkets. The entire model prints upright with no supports.
