The most funded 3D printer in Kickstarter history launches April 10 at $849 with a radical approach to multi-color printing: four independent toolheads that physically swap in just 5 seconds.
A New Approach to Multi-Color Printing
Snapmaker has announced the official launch date for the U1, its highly anticipated desktop 3D printer that takes a fundamentally different approach to multi-color and multi-material printing. The machine goes on sale April 10, 2026, with pre-orders now open at $849.
The U1 addresses one of the most persistent pain points in consumer 3D printing: the waste and downtime associated with multi-color prints. Traditional multi-material machines must flush the previous filament from the nozzle every time a color changes, burning through material and adding significant time to longer prints.
Snapmaker's solution is elegant in its simplicity — rather than optimizing around the problem, the U1 sidesteps it entirely with four independent toolheads, each with its own dedicated nozzle. When a color change is needed, the printer physically swaps the active toolhead in just five seconds.
No More Cross-Contamination
Because each toolhead has its own dedicated nozzle, there's no cross-contamination between color transitions and no material to flush during print job changes. Purging only happens at the start of a print or during calibration.
Snapmaker claims this approach reduces waste by up to 80% per print compared to conventional multi-color printers, while cutting multi-color print times by up to five times.

Most Funded Kickstarter 3D Printer
The U1 originally launched on Kickstarter in 2025, where it raised $20,161,265 from 20,206 backers — making it the most funded 3D printer project in Kickstarter history. The campaign far exceeded its funding goals, demonstrating massive consumer interest in a better solution for multi-color printing.
Snapmaker ran an extensive beta testing program before the official launch, with early adopters evaluating the machine at Maker Faire Hannover, PrintedHub in Germany, and 3DPrintopia in the United States.
Software and Smart Features
The U1 bundles with Snapmaker Orca, the company's own software platform with tested profiles for its materials and machines. A companion app handles remote monitoring, print management, and time-lapse recording.
Additionally, Snapmaker has announced AI-based detection for print failures and workspace obstructions — a welcome safety feature for unattended printing.
Materials and Compatibility
Out of the box, the U1 supports PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, and PCTG. With the optional top cover and hardened steel nozzle, users can print PET, ABS, ASA, PA, PC, carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer, and glass-fiber-reinforced polymer.
Pricing and Availability
The Snapmaker U1 is available for pre-order at $849, which includes all four toolheads. Shipping begins April 10, 2026, in most major markets.
