What makes the M1D different

Most desktop printers that handle multiple materials fall into two camps. IDEX machines use two independent extruders that can print different filaments side by side, but they are slow to switch roles. Tool changers swap a single carriage between many heads, but they add complexity and purge waste. Sovol says the M1D does both at once.

The printer uses independent dual extruders (IDEX) and bolts on an active tool changer. That means it can run two materials in parallel and also swap in dedicated heads for jobs that need them. According to Sovol, the design keeps the speed of dual extrusion while sharply cutting the filament purged during color changes.

The open-source angle

Sovol is leaning on its community roots here. The M1D ships as an open-source platform, which matters to makers who want to tweak firmware, swap hot ends, and avoid vendor lock-in. That positioning puts it in direct conversation with Prusa's toolchanging ambitions and Bambu's closed-but-fast ecosystem.

Price and availability

The M1D launched on Kickstarter with early pricing from $1,199. Sovol has also published a comparison against its own SV08 Max, framing the choice as large-format speed versus multi-material flexibility. For buyers who have outgrown a single-nozzle machine, the M1D is the more interesting bet.

If you want multi-color prints without the mountain of purge waste that comes from most AMS-style setups, this is one to watch. Back it only if you are comfortable with first-wave hardware, but the concept is sound.
