Sovol's M1D printer pairs two independent nozzles with six swappable toolheads, promising five times faster multi-color output and near-zero waste at a $1,299 entry price.

How the M1D works

Sovol's latest printer is a hybrid. It uses true independent dual-extruder (IDEX) motion, so both nozzles can move without waiting for the other. One nozzle carries a fixed toolhead. The other can swap between six additional heads in about five seconds. Sovol keeps standby heads warm so they are ready the moment they dock.

The build volume measures 300 x 300 x 350 mm. The printer runs OrcaSlicer by default, not a locked-down proprietary package. That open-source base means the community can modify and improve the machine over time.

Speed and material claims

Sovol says each nozzle can hit 600 mm/s with acceleration up to 10,000 mm/s squared. The company claims multi-color or multi-material prints finish five times faster than competing systems and produce almost zero waste. The Advanced model adds a heated enclosure that holds 60 degrees Celsius inside, which helps with ABS, PA and PC.

Anti-fail features

An eddy current sensor handles automatic bed leveling with Z compensation. The M1D also packs X and Y nozzle cameras, vibration compensation and a 720p chamber camera. Future firmware updates will add AI-based obstruction and spaghetti detection.

Price and availability

The M1D comes in Essential and Advanced versions. Early bird pricing sits at $1,299 for the Essential and $1,599 for the Advanced. Shipping is expected to start in November. A Kickstarter campaign is already live and has pulled in over $2.8 million, far past its initial goal. Sovol's track record with crowdfunded hardware is solid, but backers should still expect the usual delivery risk.
