Sovol's new M1D printer uses two independent extruders and six swappable toolheads to print up to seven colors with almost no purge waste.

Sovol has launched the M1D, a desktop FDM printer that combines an independent dual extruder system with a six-toolhead automatic changer. The result is a machine that can print up to seven colors or materials in a single job, with tool swaps that take roughly five seconds and almost no purge waste.

The architecture, which Sovol calls DualX, has never shipped on a single machine before. One extruder stays fixed on the left side of the gantry. The second extruder on the right docks and picks up whichever of the six parked toolheads the print needs next. Each toolhead heats independently, so the unused heads stay warm while they wait. That eliminates the long reheat pauses that plague single-nozzle multicolor systems.

The build volume is 300 by 300 by 350 millimeters. In duplication mode, the two independent extruders can print two identical parts side by side. In mirror mode, they produce left and right halves of a single model at the same time. Those modes are useful for small-batch production, print farms, and anyone who needs matched mechanical components without splitting the job across multiple printers.

Sovol is selling the M1D through a Kickstarter campaign that has already raised over $3.5 million, well beyond its original goal. There are two models. The M1D Essential is an open-frame design priced at $1,299 for early backers, with a planned retail price of $1,799. The M1D Advanced adds an enclosure and a heated chamber that reaches 60 degrees Celsius, letting users print ABS, ASA, nylon, and polycarbonate without warping. The Advanced early bird is $1,599, with a $2,099 retail target. Shipping is expected to begin in November 2026.

The six-channel Auto Filament System feeds one strand per toolhead and watches for runouts, clogs, and tangles. Calibration uses cameras instead of touch probes, which Sovol says is up to 2.5 times faster than probe-based systems. A chamber camera monitors the build plate for stray objects before a print starts and for spaghetti failures during printing, pausing the job and sending an alert if it sees trouble.

The real test for any new tool-changer design is long-term reliability, not spec sheet numbers. Early Kickstarter units tend to need firmware maturation and calibration tweaks before they run smoothly. But the underlying concept is sound. By giving each color or material its own nozzle, Sovol avoids the purge-tower waste that makes multicolor printing on single-nozzle machines so frustrating. If the company delivers on the mechanical execution, the M1D could be the first mass-market printer to make seven-color multimaterial printing practical without a industrial budget.
