What the M1D Actually Is
Sovol's latest printer is not just another IDEX machine. The M1D pairs two fixed nozzles with six swappable toolheads, giving you seven print heads total. That sounds like overkill until you see what it does in practice. The system uses an automatic tool changer that swaps heads in about five seconds, which is fast enough that multi-color and multi-material prints do not feel like a compromise.
The build volume depends on the mode. Single-nozzle printing uses the full 300 x 300 x 350 mm bed. Six-head switching mode keeps the same footprint. Dual-overlap seven-head printing drops to 240 x 300 x 350 mm. Copy and mirror modes shrink further, but those are niche use cases. For most people, the full bed is what matters.
Two Versions, One Philosophy
Sovol is selling the M1D in two configurations. The Essential is an open-frame printer with no chamber heating. The Advanced adds an enclosed chassis and active chamber heating up to 60 degrees Celsius. The Advanced also adds support for materials like ABS, ASA, PA, and PC, while the Essential sticks to PLA, PETG, TPU, and PVA. Early Bird pricing on Kickstarter starts at $1,299 for the Essential and $1,599 for the Advanced. Delivery is expected in November 2026.
Those prices put the M1D in a competitive spot. A seven-toolhead IDEX system from an established brand at that price point is unusual. Sovol has been shipping printers since 2019, so there is some track record here, but crowdfunding always carries risk.
Hardware That Matters
The M1D uses hardened steel nozzles as standard, with 0.6 mm and 0.8 mm options available. The hotend reaches 300 degrees Celsius. The bed is a textured PEI steel plate with 800W AC heating. Motion comes from an accelerometer-based vibration compensation system and input shaping to reduce ringing at speed. Maximum travel speed is 600 mm/s with acceleration up to 10,000 mm/s squared.
Auto bed leveling uses non-contact eddy current sensing with real-time Z-offset compensation. Dual cameras handle X and Y toolhead calibration, and the chamber camera monitors prints for failures. Sovol says the AI detection features will arrive in a later over-the-air update.
Software and Ecosystem
The M1D ships with OrcaSlicer, which is a sensible default. OrcaSlicer handles multi-material and multi-color setups well, and it works on both macOS and Windows. Because the printer is open source, the community will likely add support for other slicers and customize the firmware over time.
The six-channel auto filament system detects clogs, runout, and tangles across all six swappable toolheads. That is a practical feature. Anyone who has waited for a multi-material print to fail halfway through because one filament spool ran out will appreciate it.
Who Should Buy One
This printer is aimed at makers who want multi-color or multi-material prints without buying a separate machine for each material. Prototype developers and small production runs are the other target markets. The 300 mm cube build volume is decent for desktop use, and the open-source nature means the printer will likely evolve after purchase.
The Kickstarter campaign has already raised over $2.7 million from more than 1,700 backers. That level of interest suggests there is real demand for an affordable IDEX-plus-tool-changer combo. Whether Sovol can deliver on time remains to be seen, but the company has a history of shipping products.
