The Pentagon wants parts, not prototypes

Defense agencies have spent years proving that 3D printing can make useful metal and polymer parts. The harder part is proving the same part will come out the same way on every machine, in every batch, at production volume. That qualification gap is the single biggest reason additive manufacturing still sits on the edge of the defense supply chain instead of at its center.

On August 18, Stratasys said it had won $7.8 million through the 2026 America Makes and Department of Defense Organic Industrial Base Modernization Challenge to attack that exact problem. The 24-month program will equip Stratasys F3300 and F900 industrial printers with in-process quality assurance technology that captures data while a part is printing, spots anomalies in real time, and produces the documentation defense buyers need for qualification.

What the money will actually buy

America Makes describes the project as a way to remove one of the largest barriers to wider additive use in defense: inconsistent part verification. If a printer can flag problems as they happen and automatically generate a quality record, manufacturers spend less time on post-build inspection and less money repeating builds that failed silently. The goal is not just better parts, but faster approval for production contracts.

Rich Garrity, Stratasys chief business officer, framed it as a way to make qualification less of a bottleneck. Teams that can see what happened inside the build chamber can clear applications with less friction and expand production more confidently, he said. The language is cautious, which makes sense for an industry where a single failed aerospace or naval component can erase years of trust.

A small award in a much larger pattern

The Stratasys grant is part of a broader push to seed the defense industrial base with additive capacity. In August, the US Air Force gave 3D Systems an extra $9 million to continue a large-format metal 3D printing program for aerospace parts, lifting total funding to $27.4 million. In April, Naval Air Systems Command awarded Colibrium Additive a $31 million contract to qualify 3D-printed metal components for naval aircraft. Velo3D picked up an $11.5 million production contract in February for national security parts.

Those numbers are still modest next to a single Tomahawk missile production line, but together they show the Pentagon is treating additive manufacturing as infrastructure rather than novelty. Stratasys is betting that software and sensors, not just bigger machines, will be the piece that makes that transition stick.
