Sunlu's new PETG 2.0 and Silk PLA+ 2.0 filaments target two of the most common complaints in budget FDM printing: moisture-triggered stringing and glossy prints that snap too easily.

PETG 2.0: Less Hygroscopic, Less Stringing

Sunlu has reformulated its PETG filament with a revised polymer composition that reduces moisture absorption during storage and printing. PETG is well known for being hygroscopic: it pulls water from the air during a print, and that moisture turns to steam in the hotend, producing stringing, oozing, and weak layer adhesion. The standard fix is drying, but drying only works if the filament stays dry after it leaves the dryer.

PETG 2.0 is designed to hold its moisture resistance longer after opening the spool. Sunlu says the material maintains clean, stable extrusion performance even after prolonged exposure to ambient air. In practice, that means fewer retraction headaches, fewer surface defects, and less wasted material on purge towers. The filament prints in the standard PETG temperature range of 230 to 250 degrees Celsius on a bed heated to 70 to 80 degrees.

Silk PLA+ 2.0: Gloss Without the Snapping

Silk PLA is one of the most visually distinctive filaments on the market. The metallic shimmer comes from mica or similar additives in the polymer matrix, and those same additives are usually what makes the material brittle. Standard silk PLA tends to delaminate along layer lines and snap at sharp corners, which limits it to display pieces that will not see any mechanical stress.

Silk PLA+ 2.0 addresses that weakness with a revised binding formula. The new composition delivers richer color saturation and a higher-gloss surface than the first generation, according to Sunlu, while improving layer-to-layer adhesion and impact resistance. The result is a material that still looks like silk but behaves more like a standard PLA+ for strength and reliability.

Pricing and Availability

Both filaments are available now through Sunlu's official store and major resellers. PETG 2.0 ships on 1kg spools for $12.99. Silk PLA+ 2.0 ships on 1kg spools for $14.99. Those prices put both materials well below the $15 per kilogram threshold that the All3DP review highlighted, which is a competitive position against other budget filament brands.

The materials are compatible with most FDM printers and do not require hardware changes. Standard PLA and PETG print settings apply, with the usual caveat that silk materials benefit from slightly slower print speeds and careful retraction tuning to preserve the surface finish.

For anyone who has given up on silk PLA because it snaps mid-print or given up on PETG because it strings relentlessly after a week on the shelf, these reformulations are worth testing. At these prices, the risk is low, and the improvement in material behavior is real.
