Singapore startup Bioactivx is using a cleanroom fleet of UltiMaker printers to 3D print synthetic skin for burns. HSA approval is in hand and the company is now scaling across Asia-Pacific.
UltiMaker has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Singapore-based MedTech startup Bioactivx to co-develop a scalable, on-demand manufacturing solution for regenerative wound care. The partnership gives Bioactivx access to UltiMaker's platform as it scales production of its HSA-approved synthetic skin substitute.
What Bioactivx is building
Bioactivx's flagship product, Bioactiv Matrix, is a 3D-printed synthetic skin substitute designed for severe burns. The material contains no animal-derived components and does not require cold-chain storage. Its reticular structure, a network of small interconnected cells, is printed in-house using a proprietary active-ingredient filament. The result is a scaffold that accelerates wound closure and supports scar-free healing.
Why UltiMaker was chosen
Bioactivx built its cleanroom print farm on UltiMaker hardware. In announcing the MOU, Bioactivx CEO Dr Teo Peili pointed to UltiMaker's open architecture as decisive. That openness let the startup develop and fine-tune its own proprietary print process without working around the constraints of a closed system. UltiMaker CEO Michiel Alting von Geusau called the HSA certification a powerful proof point for the broader medical 3D printing industry, noting that the approval demonstrates 3D-printed end-use medical devices can meet exacting regulatory standards when the right quality controls are in place.
What comes next
Under the MOU, the two companies will jointly develop a deployment model aimed at bringing wound-care production closer to the point of need. The goal is faster access to treatment within the critical early window after injury, by reducing dependency on centralized manufacturing and traditional cold-chain logistics. Bioactivx says regulatory submissions for the Bioactiv Matrix are already underway in the USA, EU, Australia, and the rest of ASEAN. The company's vision is straightforward: advanced scar-free healing available to every patient, wherever they are.
