The University of Maine launched 3Dirigo X, a 30-foot vessel it says is the first 3D-printed boat of its size designed for high-speed offshore use.
From Lab to Water
On Friday, the University of Maine put a 30-foot, 300-horsepower boat in the water at Hampden and claimed a first: 3Dirigo X is the largest 3D-printed vessel of its kind designed to run offshore at speeds near 40 knots. That is a big step past the original 3Dirigo, which set three Guinness World Records in 2019 mostly by proving a boat that size could be printed at all.
This time the point is performance, not just proof. Researchers at UMaine's Advanced Structures and Composites Center spent more than five years tuning the design, materials and print process so the hull could take the pounding of real ocean conditions. The team now prints at roughly 500 pounds of material per hour, up from about 20 pounds when the work began.
Why It Matters for Boatbuilding
Traditional boatbuilding leans heavily on expensive molds. Change the hull shape and you often build a new mold. UMaine's approach treats the hull as a digital file. Designers can tweak the geometry and print a different hull on the same equipment without starting from scratch.
The payoff is not just speed for one-off prototypes. For commercial builders, that flexibility could make small production runs cheaper. For defense users, it means the same printer network could produce hulls, replacement parts or unmanned craft tuned to different missions.
Federal Backing and Defense Interest
The project was funded through the Department of Defense's Accelerated Rapid Prototyping program. U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and Keith DeVries, director of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Manufacturing Technology Program, were at the launch.
DeVries called the launch a starting line, not a finish. The boat will now be run hard in the Atlantic so engineers can feed real-world stress data back into their models. That feedback loop is the whole idea behind digital manufacturing: build, test, update and build again with less physical rework.
What Comes Next
UMaine is opening a 55,000-square-foot Factory of the Future that will push the printing rate toward 1,000 pounds per hour. The university says the goal is not to replace shipyards but to give them a new tool that cuts mold costs and shortens design cycles.
If the Atlantic trials go well, 3Dirigo X could become the clearest sign yet that large-scale 3D printing has moved beyond stunts and into serious manufacturing.
