xTool X1 Aims at Bambu Lab With a New Laser Platform

The laser engraver market just got a lot more interesting. On August 27, xTool is making its global debut with the X1, a benchtop laser platform explicitly positioned against Bambu Lab's freshly teased R1. The timing is not accidental. Bambu Lab dropped its first official R1 teaser on August 13, marking the company's first move into standalone laser cutting. xTool responded within hours by naming its own new machine and locking in a public reveal schedule.

Here is what we know for certain. The X1 will appear at The Next Level Maker Conference on August 27, with up-close demonstrations following on August 28 and 29. xTool has described it as a "new laser machine" and confirmed it is a fully enclosed unit, a break from the open-frame layouts that dominate the hobby-grade laser market. No price, no exact shipping window, and no official laser architecture have been published yet.

Industry leaks fill in some of the gaps. Preliminary reports point to three blue-diode power tiers: 20 W, 40 W, and 60 W. The 60 W tier is the most significant detail. Water cooling into a consumer diode laser at that power level is unusual, and it would push the X1 into premium small-business territory rather than hobbyist territory. Swappable infrared capability has also been mentioned, which would let the same chassis handle marking and cutting on metals without buying a second machine.

The competitive context matters. xTool currently controls roughly 47 percent of global gross merchandise value in the consumer laser engraving space. Bambu Lab is entering with the R1, which is expected to use a CO2 laser source. CO2 hardware cuts certain materials well, but it brings bigger size, higher maintenance, and more mechanical complexity than diode systems. xTool's play is to offer a modular diode platform with liquid cooling, then let buyers choose the tier that fits their workshop.

For anyone watching a laser purchase, the next two weeks are the most important window of the year. Bambu Lab has promised full R1 specs in late August, with pre-orders opening in September. xTool's X1 reveal on August 27 should close the information gap on its side.
