Boston startup Z-Polymers developed Tullomer, a recyclable liquid crystal polymer fiber that outperforms PEEK and prints on desktop 3D printers.
Z-Polymers, a Boston advanced materials startup, has commercialized Tullomer, a high-performance fiber the company claims is the first new entry in the category in more than 20 years. The material is designed to replace carbon fiber, aramid, and high-temperature engineering polymers in aerospace, medical, and defense applications.
Tullomer is made from a proprietary liquid crystal polymer architecture and processed through melt spinning, avoiding the toxic solvents required for aramid production. The resulting fiber weighs one-sixth as much as steel while reaching up to six times the strength of comparable materials. It is also flame resistant, charring rather than burning, with a limiting oxygen index above 40.
The material produces minimal outgassing, a critical property for aerospace electronics and antenna applications. Carbon fiber can interfere with RF signals, a problem that disappears with Tullomer, according to founder Mike Zimmerman. The company is already using the fiber in drone structures and is developing composite 3D printing filaments that incorporate 10% to 20% Tullomer to reinforce standard materials.
On the medical side, Tullomer shows no cytotoxicity, opening paths to sutures, catheters, and orthopedic implants. The material is also recyclable, addressing a growing demand for sustainable composites. Z-Polymers is scaling production through partnerships, including a recent investment from Kureha Corporation. Composite filaments for desktop 3D printers are coming soon.
